Came across these while tidying out some junk...
- Retail HSF that comes with the Core 2 Quad Q6600 (see images).
- AMD A64 HSF that I think came with my old A64 3200 (see images).
Both never been used as the processors that came with them went into Shuttle barebones systems with their own heat pipe CPU cooling solutions.
Still have their original thermal compounds on their bases.
Willing to send to anyone that has a need for them in the UK.
If outside the UK the postage costs probably mean it would be cheaper to buy new.
Edit: Might have a couple of decent 500w PSUs lying around that I'll add for sale later.
Have to check in storage

Radeon 6700 Series Specs Leak
Hilbert has posted some details about the upcoming Radeon HD 6xxx series, I have no idea how true these may be, but these sure seems to be interesting to me, especially if that 6770 performs reasonably better than GTX460 and priced competitively.
Edit:
Apparently I somehow managed to beat Emil in posting this news bit .......
so for anyone who'd be seeing this kindly post your comments on this thread instead, so we don't have duplication as such.
Thankyou
Updating ram & troubleshooting
In the past few days I have noticed many questions from people with memory (RAM) issues.
Being that I have ran into similar problems in the past, I am posting this sticky so that FAQs can be answered quickly.
STEP 1: INDENTIFY WHAT TYPES OF MEMORY YOUR MOTHERBOARD ACCEPTS
First: Know the types of RAM that your motherboard can take.
If not sure Read The F***ing Manual (RTFM), or contact the manufacturer (go to the website or call.).
80% of installation RAM problems are caused by incompatibility.
Some motherboards are very picky about what types or brands of RAM they'll take.
Asus is one of the motherboards, Dell is another – in addition, Dell uses proprietary architecture in many of their systems so generic RAM or third party RAM will not work in many cases.
It PAYS to build your own computer.
CPU-Z is a good program to use to check out your RAM type.
It is free, however, it will not NOT tell you what brands your motherboard will take, only the type.
Be aware that identifying programs and/or websites are NOT 100% reliable indicators of what type of RAM you can use.
When all else fails RTFM.
NEVER MIX SPEED, TYPES, SIZE, OR BRANDS OF RAM.
At best it might work, at worst it won't and you might permanently do some damage.
Faster memory mixed with slower will always result in the slowest speed available if it does work (and you're wasting the faster memory speed for nothing.) I repeat again, do NOT mix types of RAM, use the proper type for the proper system.
Failing to follow this most basic of instructions will cause 98% of problems later on.
DO NOT OVERCLOCK memory.
This means do not adjust voltage settings, latencies, or other settings in your BIOS before installation.
Increasing voltage is a sure way to burn out your memory early.
Leave this stuff for experimenters and those that can afford toasted and burned out components.
If you're a newbie or an average joe/jane – LEAVE IT ALONE.
Step 2:
GROUND YOURSELF and the COMPUTER.
When installing, GROUND YOURSELF and the Computer.
Use an anti-static mat and/or wrist strap – available at Radio shack and most electronics stores.
Some recommend keeping your computer plugged in the wall for grounding reasons, I do not.
Accidentally turning on your computer is a sure way to damage something as well as to shock yourself- so leave it unplugged.
You may want to run a thin wire from the case of the computer to a common ground like a cold water pipe.
Do not work on a computer in a carpeted room if possible.
Turn OFF the computer.
I have seen stupid people plug components in when the system was still on.
If you're that dumb, don't bother upgrading the system yourself.
Read a book about basic computing before attempting operation.
Touch the computer frame and if you can, keep a part of your body in contact with the frame at all times to ensure no static buildup.
Step 3:
LOCATE SLOTS & # of STICKS REQUIRED FOR UPGRADE (RTFM)
Locate your memory slots.
Motherboards vary in the number of slots available.
Some motherboards, particularly Pentium, require memory upgrades in pairs.
Always try to match memory sticks when upgrading for enhanced performance, particularly with DDR RAM.
Step 4:
INSTALLATION:
There are 3 basic types of installation depending on your type of RAM:
SIMM:
When installing SIMMs, most manufacturers require the module to be inserted at a 45 degree angle, then snapped forward to the correct position.
Most Pentium systems require matched pairs.
DIMM:
Unlike SIMM, DIMMs may be snapped directly into the socket.
Note: Some DIMM sockets have different physical characteristics.
If your module doesn't seem to fit, do not force it.
You probably have an incompatible type.
DDR, DDR2, DDR3 are not interchangable.
Use the proper type of RAM.
Refer to Step 1.
SODIMM: (Commonly found in laptops)
Insert the module and snap down into position.
Some laptops require a single SODIMM module while others require matched pairs.
Step 5: REBOOT & TROUBLESHOOTING
Put your case back together, and replug everything.
Turn on your computer and boot up as normal.
Your BIOS should automatically recognize the added memory.
If you did it right, you shouldn't have any issues, however.......
if you did it wrong:
1.If you receive an error message or hear a series of beeps when booting, your system may not be recognizing the new memory.
Remove and reinstall the modules to make sure they are seated securely in their sockets.
2.Make sure that your new memory is the same type as your old memory.
(i.e.
FPM,EDO,SDRAM,parity/non-parity/ECC).
Using EDO or SDRAM in a system that does not support it will not work, often resulting in a blank screen or no POST (Power On Self Test), or a BIOS/CMOS setup error.
DDR and DDR2, DDR3 etc....
are NOT interchangable.
3.Fill your slots with the largest density (put the largest module in blank 0), the second largest in bank 1, and so on.
Remember, it is always advisable to have all modules the same size.
4.If your module will not fit, it may be incompatible.
There are different notches for for 3.3V, 5V, buffered, and unbuffered memory modules.
Make sure your module is oriented in the right direction also.
5.If your system still won't boot up, check your other computer connections internally with the power off.
You may have bumped or jostled another component accidentally.
6.If you can boot up and get other errors, run MEMTEST86+ from a DOS bootable floppy disk.
It is not advisable to run a computer without a floppy drive.
Floppy drives are still required for hardware diagnosis and BIOS updates, this is a leftover architecture requirement from the early days of computing.
All Intel based computers (to include AMD) have 8088 architecture at their core for basic operation.
IF you are using DOS 6.22 and earlier and are getting memory errors, consider running memmaker to re-configure your memory settings.
7.If you get a memory mixmatch error, follow the prompts to enter setup, then select save and exit.
(This is not an error – some systems must do this to update their CMOS settings.)
8.If your system is only recognizing half of a new module's memory, contact the module manufacturer tech support.
9.Recognize that adding TOO much memory (rare) may not be recognized by your operating system.
Every operating system has an upper limit.
Windows XP has an upper limit of 4 Megabytes.
Older versions of Windows are less.
10.When all else fails, RTFM.
Early 90's ASCII game..
May or may not be the right place to post this, sorry if it isn't.
Ages back, I had this disc with a bunch of shareware games on it.
My memory is taunting me with the absence of the name of this game, so I'm coming to you guys, maybe someone here knows what I'm talking about:
You played as a Yellow Smileyface, and the background was blue.
You dropped little yellow diamonds which acted as mines, and these little black(or grey or something) asterisk things would spawn at certain spawners (cant remember what they looked like) and charge directly at you.
You had to use the mines to defend yourself as you roamed around breaking the spawners to beat the level...
Please tell me someone knows what I'm talking about.
If it helps: the disc it was on was orange and black, and on the disc the game's exe was called minee.exe
Don't ask why I only remember that.
Does anyone know what this game is called?
Build/upgrade help, questions about the finer points (FSB, Overclocking, etc.)

fill out your profile) Indiana
* Are you willing to buy online? Yes, frequent Newegg user
* Are you going to re-use any parts from an earlier build? Yes, I am only upgrading my current system.
Looking to buy at most RAM, Video card, Hard Drive, and monitor
* Do you need other peripherals like a monitor, keyboard and mouse, among others? Will be reusing what I have, except maybe the monitor.
* Have you already bought any parts? Not yet
* Do you have an Operating System (OS)? Yes, Windows 7 64-bit
* Will you need any aftermarket cooling, such as a CPUGPU cooler or a watercooling setup? Not sure yet.
Hi all.
Tried some Google-fu, but didn't find anything that really answered my questions.
I want to upgrade my system this spring (primarily for gaming), and I want to have a better understanding of what FSB is and how it affects my system before I go and spend my money.
I don't feel I need help with specific item recommendations; rather, I would like some questions answered so I can make a more educated purchase when the time comes.
Here are some detailed stats for my system, including pertinent information that I have questions about:
MOTHERBOARD:
ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO
Front side bus:
Up to 5200MT/s HyperTransport 3.0 Interface
Dual-channel memory architecture,
4x 240-pin DIMM slots, max supported 16GB unbuffered EEC and non-EEC DDR3 1800 (O.C.)/1600 (O.C.)/1333/1066 MHz
I will NOT be replacing motherboard this spring.
PROCESSOR:
AMD Phenom II x4, Quad-Core 2.8 GHz.
4000MHz HyperTransports
L2 Cache: 4 x 512 KB
L3 Cache: 6MB
I will NOT be replacing the processor this spring.
There are several things that I do not understand about these two products; I bought them on the recommendation of a friend who knows more about this stuff than I do, but was not interested in explaining them at the time.
Now I want to know what this stuff means before I buy anymore.
Here are my following questions:
What is Front side bus, exactly? I understand that it is the speed, and that you want the MHz to match, but beyond that I know next to nothing.
What are Hyper Transports? Is this (5200 on the motherboard) a maximum threshold, or a recommendation? At 4000MHz, is my processor sub-par or within parameters?
What is the 1800(O.C.) and 1600(O.C.) on the motherboard? I know it has to do with the front side bus, but I don't know what the (O.C.) stands for.
I would guess that it means overclocked, but I do not know.
When I bought RAM, I went with the 1333 because I did not understand this (O.C.) stuff.
I am looking to add more RAM, or even replace the current RAM, possibly up to the max of 16 GBs.
For the record, I'm not interested at this point in overclocking.
This is due to the fact that I don't know what overclocking is or how to do it.
I would appreciate a description of what overclocking is and how it affects my system, but I don't think I will worry about doing so.
What are the L2 and L3 Cache? What do they do, and how do they affect my computer's performance?
With the processor, I do not see anything about a frequency that matches the motherboard or the RAM.
How do I determine what frequency my processor works at?
Thanks in advance for the help!
Help with choosing which laptop with lower screen res.
I recently got a GX660 in the uk and am sending it back for a refund, the reason being i realized that the native screen res is pretty high which means it would struggle in some games.
Yes i could lower it, but it makes stuff look blurry.
in the USA MSI sell the 660 with both 1366x768 and 1920x1080 screens, over here they only have the full hd screen.
So i was wondering what to do, i don't know if i could some time change the screen out for a lower resolution one as i can only find the full hd screen for sale separately and not the lower res one, if i could do that then i would probably stick with the 660.
or i can get a gx740 instead with a bit lower native res of 1680x1050 but also less features.
i'm not sure what the fan noise is like compared on both either..
please some advice?

Wireless DHCP network problems
Hey,
I am really suck with my network.
I live in a shared house and the landlord seems to have no idea so I'm having to take control, though as you'll quickly notice I dont have much clue either.
We have a Virgin internet router downstairs, provided by thembut the wireless signal hardly passes the room, so there is a cat 5e cable through the wall, upstairs to a router that I have installed DD-WRT on, that we then intend everyone to connect to wirelessly, though some are wired.
I have put the cable from the Virgin box into the Linksys normal bit (not the one that you usually put the internet one in), but I have no idea what to do now.
I've tried searching but all I can find is if I was picking up the internet wirelessly, but it its wired.
A few things seem to mention DHCP though.
Any help would be amazing please.
If you dont have time to write how, or point me in the right direction, then just the name of what I'm trying to do would be much appreciated, but any help would be great.
Thanks a lot,
Andy

New User of F900 - can you help me??????
Hello everybody..........
I hope this is the right site for the Acer f900 smartphone
Please bear with me - I am a complete newbee to allthis and I have only had my Acer F900 phone for a few days
I know about computers (and Microsoft) and I still bought a phone with Window 6.1 on it ......
I know its a risk given the performance of MS over all but basically bought the phone for four reasons:
Good video and Sound performance
Good WIFI and web browsing
Good GPS to get Sat Nav
Loads of software will be written for the Windows Operating system
...............
oh and its a phone as well!
Have piles of questions, but will try to work through the obvious ones myself (the help from Both Microsoft and Acer seems rubbish!) left a question on Acer web site 3 days ago and nothing has happened
Anyway enough of the moaning I am happy with the phone up to now, but reading this and other message boards I can see that I have loads to learn, and it all seems a different world to me........
so I hope you will bear with me if I ask silly or obvious questions......
The first thing I note is about upgrades ......
looked on the Acer site and it seems I have the latest ROM at 2.001.00_EN (the phone was only made [in china] in October 2009) but what about Windows it seems I am out of date - Why didn't Acer put Windows 6.5 on a brand new phone that has just come into the UK last week?????
What can I do ......
reading the board it seems a bit dodgy to say the least for the box does not have a Windows CD (thought it did but it seems just help) ....
will Acer be issuing an upgrade does anyone know?
My next problem is that I have downloaded some software and java software from the web but dont know how to install it on the mobile....
got the thing syncing with the USB cable OK and downloaded my music etc but just baffled as to hwo to insall software.......
cant find anywhere to do it ......
Help!!!!
(this file have extensions like JAR, SWF, MSI, CAB and runnable EXE)
Dont know what to do......
I can download onto the F900 but I cant just doble click on the Files (like EXE) to run .......lost
I also note that the phone only has 128MB of RAM computers have Gigabytes! is this enough?
Whats the best Sat Nav software to use?
Can I convert the Mini USB output port to a 3.5mm socket type for general headphones....
sent off for two adaptors but the wont go into the phone port so looks like have wasted the money......
any ideas anyone???????
Another problem I have is if I go to put the phone in my pocket.....
cant see a way of freezing the screen and am ringing the mother in law every time - the only way seems to be to put a pass code in but then that becomes a pest, or to wait for a lonf time until it goes into sleep mode
If I put a pass key on to protect the phone on startup ...
after the green windows thing finishes it seems to take ages before I can put the password in it wont accept any typing....
Anyway I wont bore you with any more but any help would be much appreciated
Hope you can help - any comment useful....

Dell Inspiron 1720 Upgrade
Just registered so this is my first thread/post.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1720, which is well out of warranty and I am looking to do some DIY upgrades.
My current spec is:
Windows 7 - 32-bit
Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 @ 2.00GHz
3 GB RAM
Samsung HM320JI ATA Drive - 320GB @ 5400rpm
NVIDIA 8400M GS GPU
I am looking to upgrade:
CPU - Intel T9300
HD - Seagate Momentus XT 500GB Hybrid
GPU - NVIDIA 8600M GT
I have been trawling through the internet and this seems to be the best I am going to get out of the Inspiron 1720.
Has anyone else performed these or similar upgrades on the Inspiron 1720? Do you have any advice on how to carry out the work etc?
Cheers,
Warren
How do I get JAVA and opera Mini5 onto my F900?
I have not had my Acer F900 for long so I hope you will excuse what might me a silly question
Looked at the reviews and speed trials of the various browsers and Opera min5 (beta) seemed to come out best so I tried to install it on my F900 phone
Followint the instructions on the Opera web site tried to download from explorer direct onto my phone but it only downloaded 1K.....
so that did not work
Downloaded it to the hard drive on my computer and hence to the F900 and I have the JAR file of 220k in my memory card
Double clicked on it to install and it came back saying ;no application associated with this file; which I assume is Microsofts rubbish error message for Java is not installed on this phone
Can anyone with an F900 phone help me to get Opera installed
Appreciate anything...............
HELP!

This ISO needs to be burned to a physical CD in order to work.
There is a hidden image contained in the ISO which contains all of the bios update files that are loaded via the boot process.
Note, the CD will show up as ;empty; when viewed in Windows after you've burned it, but the files are still there so don't worry
If you'd like to see the CD contents, boot from it then exit to DOS.
Once there you will see all the files and can copy them to another drive or usb device if you wish.
But you don't need to do any of this if you'd like to simply update your bios with a version contained on this CD.
Simply download, burn to a physical CD and boot from it.
From there you will see the usual LG BIOS UPDATE CD menu and can proceed with flashing your bios.
If you're wondering why this ISO contains a hidden section, so am I .
LG clearly used a different process when creating it from the others, but the end result is the same once you boot from it.
I've updated my own LG notebook using this CD so can say for certainty it works flawlessly.

ATI LCD color adjustment tips...
Hi all,
For a ;multimedia; laptop, the LW70's (and probably LG laptops) LCD color balance is absolutley shocking.
Compare it next to a good PC LCD monitor and youll see what i mean.
To fix this, i used the ATI color control panel to change the red/green/blue brightness, contrast and gamma levels.
These are the settings i now use (gamma, brightness, contrast in that order):
Red: 1.00, 0, 100
Green: 1.10, 0, 80
Blue: 1.00, 5, 36
Blue is the real problem with these LCDs...
its far too bright and is not linear.
With these settings windows will look like it has a shade of red compared to defualt levels, but compare it with a good LCD and youll see its much better.
Doing this also fixed the eye-strain problems i was having.
Let me know what you guys think!
Broken E500 - help me dismantle it!
Hi folks,
My best friend's laptop broke down, and I said I'll have a look at it, as a last resort.
Here's what happened: one morning, the machine just refused to turn on.
It was working perfectly fine the day before, and nothing (and nobody) touched it during the night.
I was at the house, so I can attest to that.
My friend sent it to an authorized LG service centre (in Whitby, Ontario), and was told that the motherboard is busted.
The repair centre quoted a nice lump sum of CAD 450 for replacement costs, including labour).
Considering that a brand-new Acer CULV dual-core ultraportable was only CAD 330 (taxes included), I advised my friend to get a new machine instead.
And now, I've taken the busted E500, to make a last attempt to repair it.
I'm banking on the (admittedly small) chance that the repair centre was wrong in assessing the motherboard damage...
maybe it was just a busted power switch contact.
If it turns out that I'm wrong, and the motherboard's indeed dead, I'll just cannibalize the parts that are still good.
My friend will probably want the HDD (in a cheap external SATA enclosure), and I can use the RAM for another machine, but the rest can go (so if anyone needs spare parts, let me know...)
But my first - and most important - question is this: Does anyone know how to safely dismantle the machine? I can figure out by myself, but I don't want to damage anything in the process.
So...
anyone?
PS: At first sight, I have to say that the inside of the laptop seems to be well put together.
It seems that they put a lot of care in it.
Even the HDD well has a foam lining, which is something other manufacturers don't bother with.
LG Bios Update for All Models!!
1- My cousin have an LG laptop (S1 EXPRESS DUAL).
2- He purchased 250GB HDD SATA which didn't work.
3- He need to update his Bios.
4- LG's policy are: We don't give bios files to costumers.
<< They think we are all noob.
5- So we need to go to it's service center.
6- When we arrive we described the situation to the technician.
He asked if we can do the update by ourselves, we say Yes!
7- Then he ask for a blank CD << those niggards!!
8- We purchased one and that the result:
Bootable CD to update bios for All LG laptops: (I don't know if it applicable in all countries, but I live in Saudi Arabia so at least it applicable for all middle east & maybe Europe)
Code:
http://rapidshare.com/files/147516968/LGBIOS08.rar
Extract the contents and burn the image ;LGBIOS08.iso; file with nero or any burning tool using a blank CD.
....
Warning: I'm not responsible for any damage .....etc
This bootable cd IS not user friendly! because its NOT for the public.
But actually it somewhat easy to follow..
It worked for me like this:
I choose the first choice.
<< since the laptop have internal DVDRom
this the second screen so I just typed: LG <<uppercase.
after that it asked for the Model name or SN number << you can find it in a sticker under the laptop.
...
Finally here are the list of Bios version for every model << which have an updated bios in the time of this cd (25-1-2008)

E500 LCDmade
I thought LG is a manufacturer of LCD panels for notebooks and TVs.
It is a shock when I look up the LCD manufacturer code for the E500.
It SHP13DA ..It sounds like a Sharp LCD panel..
I used another software to check and it indicated the LCD was made in the year 1990.
Not sure why LG uses other companies LCDs?

Any ideas of how to stop it?
Thank you,

LG E500 Screen split in 6..Please help
Heya gang,
I'm hoping that someone here with some PC knowledge can please be kind enough to help me, I'm desperate.
My Wife's Laptop has suddenly had a big issue with the screen.
On startup the screen splits into 6, and asks for a repair.
I am pretty new to all of this caper, and am trying to save myself from a divorce and our kids from a berating they will never forget...(The good wife has blamed them for doing something ;stupid; on her laptop whilst she was at work).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Give me some advice which I should buy
Recently I want to buy a LG notebook but I don't know how to choose and which kind can suit me best.
I am a common teacher in a middle school, so I have no special demands to the machine.

Max disk size for S1
Hi, a brief question,
I want to change my original 120Gb HD in my S1 Express Dual notebook.
I'm thinking into install a WD Scorpio black SATA 7200 500Gb but I have read some threads in this forum and I'm a bit confused...
Somebody could tell me if the maximum capacity of a hard disk with last BIOS revision RKYWSF33 is limited or is under reasonable limits?
Or easier, somebody have tried to install a 500gb hdd or a 320gb hdd and have checked that works?
Thanks & regards

LG S510 webcam not working (it probably never did)
I have a LG S510 for a long time, but I never did use the webcam.
Also because I mostly use linux.
But I decided to see if I could get it to work and the webcam device is simply not listed nor in linux, neither in windows vista device manager.
I downloaded and installed the Cyberlink YOUcam program from the LG driver/support page, and when I run the program it doesn't detect any webcam.
Is it hardware broken from the beginning? Or am I missing any driver/bios update?
Thanks for any help.

LG fan/heat problem with XP
Hi,
I have the exact same problem as in this thread:
LG S1 Dual Express fan modes messed up
Is this a problem that you know of now? My problems started when I installed XP instead of Vista.

LG P1 Express Bad Flash ? Dead ? Lights up but won't boot
Can someone help me ?
I have an LG P1 Express Laptop.
( LG P1-BP01A9 ).
When I push the Power button the top Power light comes on and same with the front Power light and HDD light, but that's all that happens..
The screen stays blank..
It's not the LCD because it's the same connected to an external LCD.
The person I got it from told me he flashed the bios and this is what happened.
I'm wondering if there's a way to FORCE a flash like you can with HP DV6000 series Laptops by holding the ;Fn; key and the ;B; while booting...
ANY help or Suggestions would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks everyone

MSI FAQs
1.
Who is MSI?
Micro-Star International (MSI) is a Taiwanese computer and components manufacturer.
MSI specializes in the design and manufacture of motherboards, graphics cards, barebone PCs, notebook computers, networking products, servers, multimedia, consumer electronics, and storage devices.
It manufactures both ATI and nVidia chipset graphics cards.
Some custom personal computer manufacturers such as Alienware and Falcon Northwest have been known to sell PCs equipped with MSI branded motherboards.
MSI has been known to produce motherboards which are suitable for overclocking which is popular among hardcore PC gamers.
MSI products are sold as retail, OEM parts, or to other corporations.

2.
What is a whitebook?
A whitebook is a highly configurable notebook that is often sold with
just the chassis and vital components such as the motherboard, screen,
battery, etc.
What's missing is the software, CPU, RAM, Hard Drive,
Bluetooth, and occasionally optical drives.
Often, MSI resellers
give consumers the option of having them install these components for them,
or allowing the consumer to purchase it as a barebone should he/she decide
to install these component themselves.
As such, whitebooks can often end up costing
much less than their name brand counterparts.
In addition, most American consumers
are able to avoid hefty sales tax, provided that they purchase a whitebook from a reseller
residing in a different state.
In addition to whitebooks, MSI sometimes sell their notebooks directly to the public in pre-configured models.
Averatec is also known to use a few MSI models for their thin and light/ ultra portable models.
3.
Where to find MSI?
Due to the number of resellers, as well as the varying designations given to
rebranded MSI whitebooks, it will be difficult to list them all.
However
the list below represents some of the more well known MSI vendors.
USA:
PowerNotebooks - usually sold under PowerPro lines, particularly 12; models.
Nevada based
Discountlaptops - usually sold under Chembook, particularly 17; models.

Mwave - found in their pre-configured section.
California based
RK Computers - found under MSI Notebooks section.

~GX660(R) Owner's Lounge~
Lets clean this forum up just a bit.
I think Ryzeki's Review thread has branched out to something ridiculous! Thanks to him though for kicking off the discussions on that notebook.
That being said, for people who have questions, comments, modifications, problems, drivers, and all things regarding the MSI GX660(R) 15.6; Notebook: Post it here!
Remember the GX660 and GX660R are the ATI-based versions that essentially have the same chassis, BIOS, and general construction.
Make sure if you're having issues you post which system you have (or want), but for the most part, all owners of this system can answer questions and problems due to the similarity of the units!
Those with GT660 questions, also feel free to chime in.
But remember that your system is slightly bigger with an nVidia 285 card, so some of your problems will be specific to your system.
Thanks everyone!
Blind flashing VBIOS
I got my VGA BIOS broken two days ago.
It was because of Winflash, which flashes VBIOS in windows.
First of all, NEVER USE WINFLASH.
I didn't read carefully about it's dangerousness.
Anyway, here is my story.
And I hope this will help other people having the same problem.(But I hope no more disease like this happen to someone.
NEVER USE WINFLASH)
When I first encountered this problem, I got blank screen on bootup.
There was no way to do something, because the laptop even doesn't recognized hard disk as well.
I asked here in the thread GX640 owners lounge, and people said it is impossible to recover by myself.
I also asked MSI technical support, and they replied me that I need to get AS.
He said, since foreign MSI companies don't have BIOS writer, entire replacement of mainboard is required.
This was really a nightmare.
But I thought there might be a way because this is not a problem of BIOS, but VBIOS.
So I tried to fix this by myself.
The reason why this was so hard work is, in fact the laptop doesn't go through posting process.
But I found a trick.
When the laptop starts to boot I hit numlock key repeatedly then sometimes it passed the posting.
I checked this by responses of drives such as USB stick, hard disk.
I found that I can get into CMOS because after I made it to post and hit DEL key and then I hit F10+enter.
Then it rebooted.
So I was sure I can enter the CMOS.
Next step was to change boot priority because my setting was hard drive 1st.
So I changed it by blind CMOS manipulation.
I needed a key sequence to do that.
Septimus_DSX helped me using CMOS screen images.(thank you Septimus_DSX)
And then I made a DOS-bootable CD and tried to boot on DOS.
The really hard stuff is that the laptop didn't always pass through posting process so I reboot again and again and tried by hitting keys.
And moreover, it hung up very frequently during each step.
But finally I got a chance to get the DOS prompt!
I can check it because CD-ROM responses when I hit enter after any command.
I went to C: drive and did atiflash.exe to recover my VBIOS.
I rebooted with no hope, but there was a miracle.
I got the screen.
I'm writing this post right after I came back to windows on my laptop.
that's it.
I made it.
I really didn't expect this is possible.
I spent two entire days, but I'm now so happy..

Msi Gt680 & Gx680
Well, here are the future replacements for the current GT663 & GX660, acoording to Portables4Gamers.
It includes the new Intel platform Sandy Bridge and the GX680 will feature the AMD Radeon HD 6870M.
Some specs:

GX740 Graphics Card/Cooling/Fan and stuff
Isn't this supposed to be a dedicated card? It doesn't look like that in a couple pics that I've seen (I don't wanna open it :P) Can somebody direct me to technical images with labels of what's what?
Also, I am not understanding how the fan works.
Both big vents on the back and the right side are exhaust? And the inlet is the tiny grid at the bottom? Is that correct?
It seems that whether I plug in my USB cooling pad or not makes no difference in the GPU temperature.
May be I am disrupting the airflow.
Am I better off not using a cooling pad?
MSI A5000 Dual Core Laptop
I am also looking at this laptop, an msi a5000.
Do you think it will suit my needs? I am looking for a nice gaming or powerful media laptop.
Here it is:

GX740 Optical Bay Hard Drive issue
So a bit of bad news good news here.
Bad news first:
The system hangs at bootup with my other HDD installed, just like when it was used as a USB external.
I thought it was because it was FAT32 before first, so I formatted it and it's now NTFS but still hangs.
I think the issue is that it tries to use it as a boot drive from the BIOS (BIOS recognizes my eSATA and two SATA drives).
When I go select the boot order it only has the Samsung drive (the new one from my old USB external) as a possible HDD option.
The only way I can let it boot up is if I manually choose the boot device.
Anyone have a fix for this?
Second and most annoying: I cannot remove this thing! It seems like it's stuck somewhere when I'm trying to pull it out.
I can get as far as detaching it from the SATA port inside the laptop but then a little bit after that it gets stuck.
I'm guessing it's one of the mounting screws...
So anyone have an idea about how to get it out? Maybe disassemble the entire thing? I've tried pulling really hard on it and it's just not coming out.
Okay now the good news.
The drive works well when I'm inside Windows.
Everything is recognized and the speed isn't bad.
CrystalDiskMark reported 73.13 seq read and 68.89 seq write.
Pretty decent for a 5400RPM I guess...
MSI GX640 and Civ5
I was wondering what settings you use.
I can see that it's not CPU power it needs since a turn not even max out cpu usage.
The game is smooth until I press next turn, then it stutters until finished.
So now I was wondering if I'm pushing too hard or that's just the way it is
MSi GX740-235 Open Box from newegg
Hi.
Yesterday, during black friday, I noticed that newegg put up >one< unit of MSI GX740 ;open box; for $845.
I...
didn't think clearly through and just jumped at the price and the opportunity.
Even after tax, It was more than $100 cheaper than from Amazon.
But after looking at the spotty record of open boxes, I am very, very worried.
I thought that because it's the holiday season, anyone who returned it probably did it brand new.
But it seems that's not really it.
In addition to the possible loss of power cable/battery, I've read here in this forum that ppl need to to bios/vbios flashes, and a bunch of other things that an amateur can easily brick a computer.
....
So I'm extremely worried that the unit is just ;bricked; and will be DOA.
From the order record, it hasn't been packaged/shipped yet so I can cancel it right now without paying the return shipment.
What are the odds of me having a completely unworkable unit? Should I cancel the order? If, by chance, the item was bricked, can I call the MSI customer support and tell them it was DOA, rather than go through Newegg's customer support?
I am so, so worried.
MSI GX740 with 5870 1gb ddr5
just had a look at this big boy over at xoticpc.
hell they sure do get them out fast
under the hood is a 5870 with ddr5....
and that too at such a sweet price.
my first one was a 1719 (aka gt700 i think) and looking to upgrade.
its little brother was also up online with a 5850 ati gpu.
one question for the gurus out there..
what kind of performance can i expect between the two gpus? say i keep the rest of the config the same, and play the same game (crysis...) at same settings, what kind of difference should there be between the two?
(by the way eta is march...
come on guys u can do better...)

Catalyst 10.11 Fixes OC issue
Just a heads up, the Catalyst 10.11 release fixes the issue that when you have an OC clock, the idle clocks are messed up.
Now the idle clock/voltages are normal even when you have on OC clocks.
It also seems to really help with temps...
I was getting maybe 75-78 before now it's around 70C
Ryzeki's MSI GX660R Review
-WORK STILL IN PROGRESS!-
Introduction
Welcome to my review for the MSI GX660R! If you read my past review, you will notice that not too soon ago I was an Asus G51J owner (pretty happy one by the way) and suddenly made the jump for this new MSI.
If some of you even remember, I was kind of against changing my laptop because I felt the jump from GTX260m to HD5870m was not that big.
Boy was I wrong.
And I am very glad about it!
A 15 incher with an ATi Mobility Radeon HD5870? That's the first thing that will pop on most people's heads.
If you research for a bit, you will find that this particular GPU is not only powerful, but it is mostly found on 17inchers because of the heat it can produce.
Naturally, most people would be skeptical to buy a 15.6 inch notebook with such a high end GPU, specially since MSI also has a model with the radeon 5850 and moderate temps.
What I can spoil you right now, before reading further, is the fact that this machine has an absolutely amazing GPU cooling solution.
I got my awesome new laptop from the best resellers out there, GentechPC.
Like my previous experiences with them, my process was smooth and fast.
Ken Lee (a representative of Gentech, which is also a member of this community and is available for anything you need!) helped me throughout the whole process, and kept me updated regarding my order.
Personally, and from experience, Ken and Gentech provide the best experience from resellers I have seen so far in the market.
I heavily recommend them!
Coming back to the review! So what made me change my mind and order this laptop? I wanted a full upgrade in performance, and from what MSI spec'd on this machine, I was sure expecting a lot.
I am glad to say my expectations were blown away.

- What's in the Box:
The machine comes in a well designed box, sturdy build and gaming oriented design/logos around.
The contents include the standard manuals and reference guides, along with drivers/software discs, AC adapter and battery.
Sadly this machine does not have any extras in the form a mouse etc, but that hardly matters when you stop to consider what you just bought: One of the most powerful 15 inchers!
-Design and Build Quality
Coming from an Asus G51, I immediately recognized the overall size and chassis resemblance of the Asus G50/G51 series and that isn't exactly bad.
Aesthetics are very nice, with a black to gray glossy finish that thankfully is not as ;dirt magnet; as I thought, probably due to the colors chosen for the palmrest.
Pictures do not give justice to the look of this machine as it looks way more ;serious; in person (with the LEDs off, of course heh).
The Red color around the speakers is actually metallic so it does not stand out tremendously at all, and feels in line with the overall look of the machine.
The only weird thing is the LCD cover which I think it looks weird.
I don't hate it, but I don't particularly like it that much.
At least it is all black and looks less ;Look at me!; without fancy designs etc.
The machine is sturdy.
the built is entirely of plastic, or so it seems.
There isn't much flex, and the whole chassis feels strong.
The only place that seems way weaker and has considerable flex is the cover, but it feels around the same as my G51J.
I think that a support in the mid section of the cover would have made this a bit better but it is not bad at all, nor something to worry about.
- Screen
I know there is some concern with the screen.
Let's get to the facts first.
The screen has mediocre viewing angles, both vertical and horizontal, but vertical angles suffer the most.
What this means is that when you tilt the screen or move it sideways, you will start to notice color distortion.
Additionally, the screen has low contrast compared to other gaming machines.
However, it is very sharp and of quite high resolution.
The brightness settings allow for incredibly bright display, or quite low light viewing.
Using display settings augmenting color saturation, the contrast/image GREATLY improves to a good display, leaving only the low viewing angles as the bad point.
An important note: Viewing angles won't affect you much, the user, as you will most probably see the screen directly to it's sweet spot 99% of the time.
The issue would come when others look at the screen from moderate angles.
When watching the screen from a sweet spot, you will probably start to see colors begin to wash on either the bottom or top depending on the angle.
When gaming this does not affect because the angle is not that prominent, but when watching a movie or something with heavy emphasis in white/dark constrasts, you will notice dark/blacks becoming grayish.
Using the screen at 30% or so brightness (with FN+up/down arrows) in well lit rooms, you will have great colors, ink-like blacks and all, but sadly the viewing angles don't improve that much.
My take? the screen works.
It looks sharp, it is functional, produces decent colors with saturation enabled, and is perfectly bright when used on very bright places/outside.
If screen is VERY important to you, then you will most likely be disappointed.
If not, you will most likely enjoy it for what it is, specially the resolution.
I find it pleasant looking during the day, and only disappointing when playing at night ina darkish room, when the brightness does make the blacks and everything more grayish.
Note: the high brightness does make blacks look grayish when watching the screen in a dark/low light room or area.
When using in normal daylight, blacks are iindeed blacks, and colors look great.
-Keyboard
Build, distribution, material texture are all well implemented.
Typing is easy, keystrokes feel good with just enough feedback to type quickly.
I have noticed a tiny bit of missed key strokes sometimes, but I haven't identified the problem yet.
This is by far one of the best laptop keyboards I have used, wht the keyboard area has little to no flex.
material used and texture allows for a clean looking keyboard all the time.
The downside? it is not backlit.
To be honest, I don't care about it anymore.
When I first heard of the lack of backlit keyboard, I was adamant about it being a significant downgrade, but the look, feel and overall quality of the keyboard allowed me to forget such missing feature.
After using this machine for a while now, I gotta say, I don't even miss it.
It may be that the brightness of the screen help iluminate the keyboard just enough, or realizing that I rarely used the feature before but I honestly don't mind the lack of it.
coming from the Asus G51J, this keyboard provides the same distribution and size but with different texture and little flex.
Keystrokes have more feedback that the Asus keyboard, and are more akin to the G73 keyboard feel.
The flex the keyboard shows is mostly located from the mid section.
I personally don't notice much unless I type and see the keyboard.
Which I don't so at first I didn't know there was flex at all.
basically, it is a keyboard that the only thing preventing it from being perfect, it's the lack of backlit.
-Performance and User Experience:
Stock performance is incredible and on par with your expectations.
The machine performs well in single and multitasks.
Game performance is great thanks to the small bump in CPU and the superb ATi Mobility Radeon HD5870.
Additionally, MSI includes its own version of overclocking functionality with the push of a single button.
This is specially great for those that are afraid of overclocking, as it provides a small performance boost for no cost.
The best feature though, is the capability of fan control, and the turbofan feature.
At the touch of a button, you can summon the maximum speed of you fan to keep things real cool.
When gaming, specially with headphones, you won't even hear the fan that much and it ensures you complete cool temps while gaming.
From the looks of it, the Turbo feature overclocks the CPU to 1.812ghz, so it's a decent bump for a simple button.
Some games seem to gain 1-2fps, some are unaffected, some actually loose 1-2fps of performance.
The reason is still uknown to me.
And personally, I rarely use it.
Gaming is possible on 1920x1080 res, at least from all the games I have tried so far.
Windows Experience Index : 5.9 (slowest is HDD)
These numbers don't mean much.
Even if the laptop is branded as 5.9, all components are fairly stronger on the 7.1+ scale.

Need Help- MSI WhiteBook BioS
Hi I tried searching the forum but did not find the answer under ;msi whitebook bios; or similar searches.
I also took a look at the msi faq but this was not answered.
the basic question is how do you upgrade bios on an MSI whitebook ?
Specifically i am considering picking up a 937-165641-005 (gx640 whitebook equivalent)
MSI Notebook Product Specifications
i am wondering if i need to, can i can flash using the gx640 bios from here MSI Global ? Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more
i see all sorts of warnings on msi pages about ;retail bios incompatible with whitebooks; and am wondering what is the technical feasibility here (does it actually flash successfully, never mind support or warranty)...
Do the bios not work, and just can;t be used to flash a whitebook ?
OR
Do the bios allow to flash but break your stuff if it's a whitebook?
Or
do the bios work fine and are just unsupported/void yer warranty by msi ?
or
something else?
Has anyone succesfully or unsuccessfully flashed the whitebook version of the gx640 ?
i am interested in the whitebook but fear if there are bios bugs or incompatibilities, and no way to flash bios, i could get stuck....
thanks

Msi U230?
been waiting it seems like forever for the u230, asus' congo will be out by the end of the month but no hdmi, toshiba's congo is selling now in both 11.6 and 13.3 but no wireless n or gigabit lan.
hp has it on there 13.3 but i didnt wanna go bigger then 12.1, so I am stuck waiting with no idea when the release date is.
I guess I'll have to break down and buy the toshiba t115d if it doesnt release soon anyone have any news on release date yet?
Did ATI Overdrive Auto-Tune (10.11) Screw Up My System?
I recently tried using the ATI Overdrive Auto-Tune (10.11) on my MSI GX740 and in the middle of the test my system shutdown.
I figured it was because it hit the predefined critical temp.
However, now when I try to turn my system on it only stays on for about 20-30 seconds before the system initiates what appears to be a thermal shutdown.
The fan kicks on at its highest speed as soon as my system turns on and it appears to be venting significantly more heat than is usual for the system just starting up.
Is the ATI Overdrive Auto-Tune responsible for this? If so, how? I thought it was just a software mod? If not, what do you think is going on, hardware failure?
